Yonsei Korean Language Institute

The Regular Program is an intensive Korean language program for international students and overseas Koreans who are interested in Korean language and culture.
It is suitable for students preparing for university/graduate school admission in Korea, employment, TOPIK preparation, long-term stay, and various other purposes. Approximately 1,700 students from around 60 countries enroll each semester.

• Program Duration: 10 weeks per semester
• Class Hours: Total of 200 hours per semester
• Academic Terms: 4 semesters per year
• Levels: Level 1–6 (designed according to TOPIK levels)

• Morning Course: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
• Afternoon Course: Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM - 5:50 PM

  • Eligibility

    • Applicants must have graduated from high school or hold a higher academic qualification.
    • GED and homeschooling certificates are not accepted.
    • Applicants who are expected to graduate from high school are not eligible to apply.
    • Temporary graduation certificates are not accepted.
    • There is no age limit.

    • Application fee: KRW 120,000 (non-refundable)

    3. Submit Required Documents by Mail (For D-4 Visa Applicants)

    • D-4 visa applicants: Required documents must be submitted by mail.
    • Non-D-4 applicants: No additional mailed documents required.
      ※ Submitted documents will not be returned under any circumstances.
      ※ Admission screening will begin only after the online application, application fee payment, and submission of all required postal documents have been completed.
      ※ Applicants from mainland China are advised to refer to the Chinese-language website.

    4. Pay Tuition and Complete Registration

    • D-4 visa applicants: Registration for a minimum of 2 semesters is required.
      ※ Applicants from certain countries are required to register for 4 semesters.
    • Non-D-4 applicants: Registration is completed after tuition payment.

    5. Visa Document Issuance (For D-4 Visa Applicants Only)

    • The Certificate of Admission will be issued after tuition payment is confirmed.
    • Applicants must apply for a D-4 visa at the Korean embassy in their home country before entering Korea.

    Dormitory Application Information
    

    • Applicants who wish to apply for 2026 Fall dormitory housing MUST:
      • Ensure all postal documents arrive by June 26 (Fri), 2026
      • Complete tuition payment by July 3 (Fri), 2026
      ※ For international transfers via Flywire, please note that payment confirmation may take at least one week.
    • The dormitory capacity is limited to about 10% of all students each semester, and it usually fills up on the first day on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, most students use off-campus accommodations.
    • Dormitory applications can be made after a student ID number is issued. The student ID is issued after acceptance and full tuition payment, and you can log in to the application page one day after the ID is issued.
    • Submitting documents or paying tuition close to the application deadline may delay your student ID issuance, which could restrict your ability to apply for the dormitory. Applicants are responsible for managing their own schedules.

  • • Required Documents for Non D-4 visa applicants
      - Students who wish to attend only one semester should enter Korea with a K-ETA or preferably a C-3 (90-day) visa.
      - Applicants with Korean nationality or those holding other visa types that permit legal stay in Korea are not required to apply for a D-4 visa.
      - Document review starts after online submission and payment confirmation. D-4 visa applicants should check the visa guidance menu.

    • Document Review: The review process begins only after the documents arrive by mail. Please submit all required documents at least one week before the application deadline to allow sufficient time for review
    • Tracking: The KLI office does not notify applicants individually of document arrival. Use the tracking number from your delivery service to check.
    •  Important Notes for Document Submission
      • Submitted documents will NOT be returned under any circumstances.
        - If you have only one original diploma, make a copy and get an Apostille or Notarization from the Korean embassy on the copy.
      • If the document is not in Korean, English, Chinese, or Japanese, you must submit an Apostilled or notarized translation along with the original document.
      • Documents uploaded to the online application must be in JPG or PDF format.
      • Mainland Chinese Students: Refer to the Chinese website for specific requirements.
      • Students from Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong: Refer to the English website for instructions.
      • All notarized documents (with apostille or consular certification) must be submitted undamaged to be considered originals.

    • Must be issued within 30 days of submission.
    • Must be over USD 10,000 in total balance under the applicant’s or parent’s name.
    • Financial documents under a spouse or sibling’s name are not accepted.
    • Certificates issued in local currency are acceptable, as long as the amount exceeds USD 10,000 at the time of document review.
    • The bank balance certificate must show a balance of at least USD 10,000 in a single certificate. Combining balances from multiple accounts or submitting multiple certificates to meet the minimum requirement is not accepted.
    • Only a bank balance certificate showing the current account balance will be accepted. Account statements are not accepted.
    • Only original financial documents signed and stamped by the bank with contact details are accepted. Photocopies are not accepted.

• Academic Regulations

  • • Placement Test: Students will be assigned to an appropriate level and class based on their performance in the speaking and writing placement test. Each class accommodates about 13 students, and classes will not be conducted if there are fewer than five students.
      ※ TOPIK scores are not considered for level assignment at KLI.

    • Attendance and Advancement:
      - Students must attend more than 80% of total class hours to advance to the next level.
      - Students who fail the same level twice will not be permitted to re-enroll in future courses at the Yonsei Korean Language Institute.
      - Failing Criteria: An average score below 60, an attendance rate below 80%, or receiving an F grade.

    • Credit Equivalency: The regular 10-week course totals 200 hours of instruction, generally equivalent to six academic credits by university standards. It is advisable to confirm credit equivalency with your home university, as regulations may vary.

    • Health Insurance:
      - Since the 2022 academic year, foreign students enrolled at Yonsei KLI are automatically covered by group insurance, so no separate insurance documents are required.
      - Students with D-4 visa will be enrolled in National Health Insurance after six months of residence, with costs borne by the student.

• Dormitory

  • ■ Available Dormitories

    • SK Global House: Offers both single and double rooms.
    • International House: Exclusively for women, offering only double rooms.
    • Both dormitories are located within a five-minute walk from the Korean Language Institute.

    ■ Dormitory Application Notice

    • Dormitory applications are available only after your student ID is issued.

    • Student IDs are issued after admission confirmation and tuition payment completion, and you can log in to the dormitory application page starting the next day.

    • Document review takes at least 1–2 weeks, and overseas tuition payment may require additional time for confirmation.

    • Therefore, submitting documents or tuition payment right before the application deadline may result in a delay in student ID issuance, which can limit dormitory application. Applicants are responsible for managing their submission and payment schedule.

    • Students wishing to apply for dormitory are strongly advised to submit documents as early as possible.

    ■ Accommodation Details

    • Dormitory accommodation is available for a maximum of two semesters (six months) and is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to students who apply by the deadline.
    • The dormitory fee covers one semester and aligns with the duration of the Korean Language Institute's courses. Meal costs are not included.
    • Smoking and drinking are strictly prohibited in the dormitory. Violations of dormitory regulations may result in eviction, and in such cases, the dormitory fee will not be refunded.

        -Password: Date of birth (YYMMDD)
      • Click on the 'Academic Information System' and select [기숙사(신촌)] tab.(Only PC or Tablet PC is available)
      • Fill Out the Application : Enter required information such as personal details and guardian's contact information, and choose the dormitory type.
      • Check Acceptance: On the acceptance announcement date, log in to the Yonsei portal, click on the dormitory tab, and check the admission information.
      • Confirm Registration: Transfer the dormitory fee within the registration period
      • Check-In: Submit a copy of your passport and a tuberculosis test result (taken within the last two months).

• Advanced Korean Program
  • • The Advanced Korean program is based on advanced learning and explores various topics in depth, including current affairs, news, and literary readings. In particular, it offers a structured curriculum to enhance advanced Korean expressions and speaking skills applicable to real-life and professional fields. Additionally, it provides a unique learning experience through special lectures by experts in various fields and cultural experience programs.
    • Eligibility: Applicants must have completed Level 6 or higher in the Regular Program or The University Korean Program, or Level 8 or higher in the Online Global Korean Program at Yonsei KLI.
      (Enrollment in the second semester is not permitted unless the first semester has been successfully completed)
    • ※ Only current students of the Yonsei Korean Language Institute are eligible to apply; therefore, document submission is not required.
    • Duration: The program can be taken for a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters (no more than 2 semesters).
    • Course Structure: The Advanced Korean Program is a 10-week semester, totaling 100 hours per semester.

    • Monday, Wednesday: 10:00 AM – 12:50 PM / Special lectures, News, Literature, Drama classes are conducted.

      - Refunds are processed based on the submission date of the refund application form.

    • The Advanced Korean Program can be taken for a maximum of 2 consecutive semesters (no more than 2 semesters).
    • There is no separate admission notification for the Advanced Korean Program. You must pay the tuition before the deadline.
    • You must complete the current course (Level 6 or higher) to apply. If you fail the current course, you must retake the same level.
    • Failure to meet the attendance or academic requirements for the first semester of the Advanced Korean Program will result in automatic cancellation of enrollment for the second semester, and any previously extended D-4 visa may be subject to cancellation.
